What is Myopia?
Myopia, commonly known as shortsightedness, occurs when distant objects appear blurry due to the eyeball growing faster and longer than usual. With children spending more time engaged in close-up activities like digital device use and reading, coupled with insufficient outdoor time, it is projected that by 2050, approximately 50% of the population will be affected by myopia.
Why is Myopia Control Important?
As the eyeball elongates, it places strain on the retina and its supporting structures. This heightened stress increases the risk of various eye conditions, including retinal detachment, myopic degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma.
The most rapid increase in myopia occurs between the age of 7 and 16, therefore it is important to start myopia control early to slow or halt its progression. The earlier the child’s myopic progression is controlled, the less impact it will have on their eyesight and ocular health in the long run.
